So Many Puppies

I can't even keep up with the amount of satos going through Carolyn's these days. The good news is that we're placing an amazing number of dogs.

First off, all the dogs I posted about before this point have gotten homes. Stella and Nubi, the two basset mixes, were the last to go. They both got placed yesterday. I'm surprised it took so long. I thought they were the cutest ones.

We also have two mother dogs in the clinic right now.

The first one to arrive was Queenie. Queenie was so close to death when she arrived that I didn't count on her making it through the night. She had her puppies during the transport and retained her placenta. Unfortunately, with the raging infection and terrible anemia, she wasn't stable enough for surgery. Amazingly, Queenie has made a comeback. It took a lot of fluids and tube feeding and antibiotics, but she is currently stable. The goal is to postpone surgery until the pups are old enough to be weaned. We run blood on her every few days to make sure she's still ok without the surgery. So far so good! Despite her own battle for survival, Queenie is an amazing mom and a sweet dog. She's ugly as sin, but she's always offering face kisses with a furiously wagging tail, even through painful treatments. She has three puppies, Snooki, Gina, and Vinny (I didn't name them!) They were born prematurely, but are thriving. I don't have many photos, but suffice it to say that they're adorable.

The other mother dog is Lily. She has been at the clinic less than a week and I don't have any photos of her yet. She is more shy than Queenie, but is starting to come around. She welped four puppies the night after she arrived. Unfortunately, one of those puppies got very sick and died.

We've had five other litters arrive in the mean time.

First up was the two bigger pups... Button and Zipper. Button looks a bit like a miniature husky and Zipper looked like an Aussie or something. Your guess is as good as ours on these two. Both boys already have homes. In fact, Alcatraz's owner adopted Button!

With them were the two smaller girls, Lacy and Velcro, who are most likely corgi/chihuahua mixes. They were shy for about a day, but quickly turned into energetic snuggle bugs. I'm trying to convince Christine to take Lacy, and a friend of mine from college is interested in Velcro.

Lacy

Then there were the pug mixes or, as we call them, the mini dogs! These itty bitty guys are so small that I'm not sure they count as dogs! They're not quite sure how their feet work yet, but their tails helicopter around at a million miles an hour. I just want to put them in my pocket and keep them there forever. They are Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. Alvin already has a home. Someone came to look at Theodore last night, and I suspect he'll be gone by the time I go to the barn today.

Last of the pups that I have photos of were the shih tzu twins, Pogo and Yoyo. The girl got adopted already and the boy has an approved adopter coming to look at him this week.

Then, yesterday, we got even MORE pups in. Six (six? four? I don't remember) chow mixes who already have homes lined up, but need to be socialized (and, let's face it, photographed). And two tiny, pathetic looking black and white puppies who need some medical attention before they get listed.

So there you have it. More puppies than you can shake a stick at. It will be interesting to see how many we get adopted by the end of the year. Carolyn is exhausted, but delighted. She says this has been her dream since she was a little girl. Heck, if you have 30 acres and a vet license, why NOT save as many homeless puppies as possible?

O, and did I mention Cricket? She's Paulie's replacement from the autism dog organization. She's a black lab/gold retriever back cross and just about the text book definition of adorable. I don't have any desire to own an adult lab, but lab puppies are probably the cutest thing on the planet. And talk about a good puppy!!!

  2. Theodore...the ear = hilarious! He has a kind of wise guy look to him.

I don't know how you can stand to be around such massive mix of adorableness and not have 20 at your own place. I am so glad you have been able to re home so many. It's a wonderful thing.
    But jeeeez, the cuteness!

    1. I took the first one that came along (Herbie). I don't have my own place yet, so that's enough for now. It's hard though...

  3. I foster dogs and totally understand how hard it can be to let them go but also how rewarding. You're doing the hard work so that these dogs can have a better chance at an awesome forever home. That said, I want Stella and Velro. :-D
