Evening at Alexandria

As I type this, I am sitting in a hotel in Richmond, VA. I am here for work training. I have spent this week getting to know my new boss better, meeting some people I've worked with remotely, and catching up with some folks who we know well but haven't seen in a while. (Funny story: my old boss is Mike's current boss and vice versa.) I am also learning a ton about the industrial side of the food industry (the whole reason I am here.) The short version of today's lesson is as follows: I can now name four types of label applicators. My favorite one is the slappy. It is not called that professionally. No, I will not elaborate.

All of this is to say that I am looking forward to being home and going back to the riding routine. In the meantime, I'll enjoy sharing photos from a ride I had with Sandy and Hannah a few weeks ago.

Pond View with Friends

Nothing like sneaking out for a ride after work on a random Thursday to lighten the mood.

Double Saddle Time

It's almost June and I'm still blogging about April. Oh my.

Two days after our Stokes adventure, I met up with Sam to babysit her baby mustang on her first off property trail ride since she came home from the trainer. Then, Sandy reached out to me and I joined her for a sunset ride from the airport on her mares. It was a glorious day.

Baby's first boardwalk!

I do love to borrow Fina.

AEA Trail Pace

Two weekends ago, Eryca and I headed out for our first pace of the year. Between weather and conflicting schedules, we pretty much missed the entire spring season. To be honest, I don't mind. I love hunter paces and we have historically done really well.

However (and you'll have to excuse me for sounding like an old fart) paces are not what they used to be. I remember the old days when the local pace was 12-15 miles and took you through the entire valley. People would tailgate before and after riding and you had to really know how to ride. Plus it was like twenty bucks to enter.

These days, a lot of paces are 5-6 miles (or less!) Depending on who is hosting and whether it's a hunter pace, trail pace, or pleasure pace, the ideal times vary drastically. I don't do these things to be competitive so I don't really care about that. In fact, I think it's great to encourage people to get out of the arena, even if it's at a walk. Plus, I totally respect doing whatever you need to do to keep horse events alive year after year. You have to adjust to your demographic.

With the cost of paces being in the fifty dollar range, though... I'm going to be picky about which ones I go to.  We stick to old favorites, places we've never been, and paces that have a longer option.

With the newfound freedom of  truck and trailer, Eryca and I have really been racking up the travel miles. We both agree that we'd rather spend money on gas to ride someplace new. I do, however, enjoy not having to navigate once in a while.

So when the Alexandria trail organization advertised that they were hosting a trail pace a new location and offering a short/long course format, we were all over it! It wound up being a gorgeous day.

AEA Trail Pace

Eryca and I had so much fun at our first hunter pace that we turned right around and did another one three weeks later. This time, we went to the one held by the Alexandria Equestrian Association. I'm a member of AEA so that I can teach at the indoor, but I've never actually ridden the trails up there. Much like our home trails, the AEA trails are members-only and consist of a lot of private farm land. This pace was advertised as between eight and nine miles, so I figured it would be worth the $45 entry fee and the 45 minute drive.

Team What the Foxtrot strikes again!

Eryca and I juggled wanting to beat the worst of the forecasted heat and not wanting to get up at the crack of dawn on a Sunday. We met at the barn at 8am.
