Random Things
1. Henrietta (the chicken with the broken leg) is doing very well. She's still inside, but she is standing and starting to move the bad leg. She has a good appetite and seems very content to be living in the Inn.
2. Mike and I were coming home from checking on 'my' six (SIX!) horses. It was dark and we were on a back road. Mike gave me a heads up about some deer running into the road. There was an Explorer coming the other way and I flashed my high beams at him to try to warn him. He didn't even slow down, even when the first deer ran in front of his car, and clipped the second deer. There was a burst of blood and the deer did a back flip with a sickening crack. She got up and ran off, but I don't think she'll survive. And the guy just sort of gave me this confused, semi-accusing look. I dunno, but if there was a car STOPPED in the road, flashing its high beams at me, I might slow down long enough to take a look. Pay attention to your surroundings, people!!!
3. Then we stopped at the liquor store in preparation for the Super Bowl (the one day a year when I turn into a football fan). In the parking lot was a Volvo station wagon with a young (maybe six year old) kid alone inside. At night. In the liquor store parking lot. Alone. I wanted to leave a note on the windshield that said, "Parents of the year, you guys are."

Dreams
I have been having some weird dreams lately. I don't know if it has to do with my rum/whiskey intake or what, but some of them actually warrant sharing.
For example, I had a dream the other night that my cough wasn't going away. It was decided that I needed to have my tonsils removed. I didn't have health insurance so I said, "Eh, I'll just have Carolyn do it. I trust her." Carolyn didn't want to get in trouble for doing a non-cat in her clinic, so we decided to do it in the basement instead.
So some big, burly 'vet tech' guy poked me in the butt with Telazol. I got sleepy enough where I couldn't move, but I was still fully aware of everything, even after they gassed me. The good news is that the surgery didn't hurt, but I could feel the tonsils being removed.
Carolyn used the same technique she uses when neutering a cat.
I think I spend too much time at the clinic.

Dog in the Road
A few weeks ago, I was heading home from my lesson with C. I had just enough time to drop Herbie off at home before heading south to ride Wink. I pulled off the highway onto the main road by our house.
Suddenly, traffic was slowing to a halt in front of me. Before I had time to curse at the hold up, I spotted a pit bull mix running across the road. He looked lost and terrified. Thankfully people were slowing down and giving him space, so he hadn't been hit yet, but, of course, nobody actually bothered to stop and try to help.
Forsaking my schedule, I pulled to the shoulder and got out of my car. Herbie perked up in the back seat, intrigued by this strange loose dog. The dog was obviously someone's pet. He was well fed with a shiny coat and a blue collar full of jingling tags. He had probably escaped from a yard and I doubted the owners had even noticed yet. He seemed friendly enough, with his tail wiggling and his face soft, but he was obviously frightened and unsure of himself. At first, he came running right up to me, but once he got within a few feet, he second-guessed himself and started barking and backing up.
"It's ok, buddy," I talked softly to the dog, dropping to a crouch on the sidewalk. Traffic continued to whizz by. "Can I see you? Why don't you come here so we can get you home." He cocked his head at me for a second and crept a step closer.
Of course I come prepared for all of these situations. Not only did I have a leash in my car; I also had a bag of dog cookies (which Erin snagged for me at the Horse Park in May). The dog followed me toward my car as I retrieved both the leash and the cookies, but he stayed just out of reach.
I turned around and resumed my squatting position on the side of the road. I tossed a cookie into the grass in front of the dog. After an initial step back, he crouched forward, sniffing for the treat. He gobbled down the first cookie, then came closer, looking for more. I broke another cookie into little pieces and tossed another bit toward him. Once again, he stepped closer. Rinse, repeat.
I had the dog within six feet of me when Ewing police and Animal Control suddenly whipped into the shoulder, surrounding my car. Heavy boots hit the pavement as the officer leaped out of his squad car.
"Ma'am, is that your dog?" he barked.
"No," I sighed heavily. "My dog is under control and in my car. I just thought I'd try to catch him before he got hit. I almost had him, too..." I aimed a pointed glance at his car.
The cop gave me the up-and-down, pausing to stare at my half chaps and riding boots. Then he said, more softly this time, "We'll take it from here."
"I guess you guys don't need me for anything else?" I offered.
"No."
"And I don't suppose you'll take any advice from me," I sighed again. The dog was now hiding in the bushes at the far side of the house I'd pulled over in front of. The burly Animal Control officer, who clearly has no feel for dogs in general, was stalking toward him with one of those noose-on-a-stick devices. "Well, good luck with him."
I drove by 20 minutes later and the dog was still darting back and forth with the pair of men chasing him around. *sigh* I didn't see him dead in the road when I got back two hours later so I'm hoping they caught him. It was a bit depressing to watch AC at work though. I'll tell you what... if I ever hit a dog because Animal Control chased it into the road in front of me, I'd be PISSED.

General Life Updates
Life has been busy and good. My brain is generally scattered and I can't seem to remember anything in any kind of particular order. Maybe I'l do bullets?
-As many of you saw, Mike and I are now Facebook official. :-P It's silly, but it makes me incredibly happy. I think I may finally have something normal (you know, disregarding that whole ex-fiance's best friend thing).
-He continues to treat me like gold. He cooks for me, snuggles me all night, and pays to fill my gas tank. He tells me I'm beautiful and isn't afraid to get goofy with me when I'm feeling wild. He is the world's best kisser (and, as a kissing slut, I would know). The way he kisses me goodbye in the morning and hello after a long day apart makes my stomach do back flips. We've been sucking face for five months and it never gets old.
-I've been trying to maintain some form of social life. Last week we had a bonfire at The Farm and Tor and I went on an impromptu paddle boating adventure on Schaefer's Skeezy Swamp of Slime (aka the pond). Yesterday Mike, Erin, and I took Herbie walking in Collier's Mills between rain showers. There have been dinners and lunches and ice cream trips. There is a long list of people I want to go visit once October is over.
-We stopped by at Jannine's last weekend because she was having a get together and I missed her. She made me 'pumpkin pie', which is Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale with a shot of vanilla vodka in it. I managed to get drunk in the middle of the afternoon and Mike had to drive us to work. Don't worry, I sobered up before it was time for make up.
-Two nights ago we did dinner with Elisa, who I hadn't seen since her wedding a year and a half ago. She and her husband are moving to North Carolina next year and she wanted to break the news to us in person. The good news is that plane tickets down there are only like $80 and we were planning on vacationing down there next summer anyway. It was good to catch up on life and news. Elisa approved of Mike (everybody does) and the conversation was full of great quotes including, "We know. You're coming," and, "She's what you'd call a MILF now."
-I got unemployment so I was able to pay my rent and continue having a place to live. I look at my options sometimes because it would be good to have a back up plan, but I don't think I'm going anywhere any time soon. Last night I was reading back over the Juliette entry and remembering that it could be worse. (If you're really bored and want to email me for THOSE stories, feel free.)
-Bryce's new girlfriend is really cool. I'm sure it was pretty awkward for her to meet us the first time, but she seems to have settled right in. Bryce made the mistake of leaving her home alone with me while he ran out for creamer, and I immediately cleared the air. She and I have a lot in common and spent four and a half hours hanging out while he was at work the other day. She's in an accelerated nursing program and lives an hour away so we don't see much of her, but I'm hoping that'll change once she graduates.
-The job search is... going. I have definitely gotten much pickier about what I am willing to do for a job. I'm still pretty open minded about what I actually want to be DOING, but my list of criteria has gotten stricter. For example- I'm not looking to commute more than half an hour, I need fixed hours and weekends free, I want a salary and health insurance, and I'm really really not willing to do anything commission based. I have been following up on some leads that have been sent to me (and appreciate everyone on here who has thought of me and sent job postings). I sent my resume to a head hunter for a Princeton company. He's a friend of a friend and will hopefully be able to help me out. I also stopped at SRF to pee after hours yesterday and chatted with Jenn for a while. I let her know that I'm taking on horse training clients. We'll see if that goes anywhere.
-Since people are asking, Ozzy is doing well. I have honestly not been spending much time with him at all, but he's happy and sound and I'm waiting for the weather to clear so we can get some adventuring in before winter is upon us.
-The Haunted gig is also going well. I only got hit once on Sunday night and I've been having a laugh riot with some of the people I'm working with. My partner in crime and I have our part of the carnival down to an art and have been getting some really good scares. We had one little kid separated from his family and running in a panic back and forth up the hallway. Every time he'd hit a new clown, he'd turn around and run the other way. He must have been going for a good ten minutes. There was another little kid who I scared pretty badly. His mom LEFT HIM and kept going. Minutes later, his cries for help reached her and she went all Mama Bear on me, jumping on my back and pulling me off the kid. Listen here, Mother of the Year, you're the one who LEFT HIM IN THE DARK WITH A SCARY CLOWN. Sheesh! Weekends have definitely been exhausting, especially for Mike who has been doing landscaping during the week and has to physically chase people for hours every weekend night. We have been sleeping for half the weekends because we need it. He could barely walk by the time Monday rolled around.
-The other night, on our way home from Haunted, Mike suddenly stopped the truck and asked, "Did I just see what I think I saw?" He turned his high beams on and backed up the road, revealing a cow plastered against the fence closest to the street. He rolled his window down and mooed a moo that would have had me mooing back if I was a cow. When I asked if we could pet the cows, Mike didn't even bat an eye before throwing the car in park and hopping out into the chilly October night. And so we found ourselves sitting in the grass outside a cow pasture in the dead of night with his truck in the middle of a back road and a lone curious sheep staring at us from behind his herd of cattle. Now I laugh every time I drive down that road.
I think that's the gist of if. If you have any questions or feel like you missed something, feel free to let me know.
